چکیده

Pure C-phycocyanin (C-PC) was isolated from Arthronema africanum to evaluate its potential antitumor effects in vivo and in vitro. Experimental myeloid Graffi tumor in hamsters was used as a model. The cell proliferation assay showed that C-PC treatment, at concentration of 100 μg mL for 24 h, significantly inhibited the growth of Graffi tumor cells (51.4% viability). Agarose gel electrophoresis of the genomic DNA of treated cells displayed timeand concentration-dependent fragmentation pattern, typical for apoptosis. Apoptotic process was related to the increase in cellular manganese and copper/zinc superoxide dismutases and glutathione reductase activities, coupled with a low catalase activity. In vivo C-PC administration (5.0 mg kg body weight) suppressed the tumor transplantability and growth, while the mean survival time of the tumor-bearing hamsters was increased. The results revealed promising antitumor activities of A. africanum C-PC and suggested the potential of this natural biliprotein pigment for future pharmacological and medical applications. The study provided new data on the mechanism of the C-PCinduced apoptosis in which the imbalance of antioxidant enzymes that favoured hydrogen peroxide accumulation might play a leading role.

Membrane Metabolites of Arthronema Africanum Strains from Extreme Habitats

Two strains of scarcely studied Arthronema africanum (Cyanoprokaryota), originating from two desert habitats in Kuwait and Kathmandu (Nepal) were investigated. Both algae possess good adaptability and grow in a wide range of temperatures and light intensities. The lethal temperature for the Kuwait strain was 50 ± 1 oÑ while the one of Nepal origin died at 47 ± 1 oÑ. The content of phycobiliprot...

Background: Chemo-immunotherapy is one of the new achievements for treatment of cancer, by which the success of anti-cancer therapy can be increased. In vitro studies have been shown that Arteether (ARE) induces apoptosis in tumor cells, but not in normal cells. Objective: To investigate the cytotoxic and immunomodulatory properties of Arteether in-vivo and in-vitro. Methods: In this study, we ...

Effect of extracted phycocyanin from Spirulina platensison growth parameters, colorations, digestive enzymes and body chemical compositions of Guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata)

Phycocyanin (PC) is one of the main pigments of algae Spirulina, which is used as a dietary supplement due to its high content of protein, vitamins, minerals and essential fatty acids. Using of extracted PC from Spirulina platensis was evaluated on growth, the body coloration (Skin and tissue), body chemical composition and digestive enzymes in guppy fish (Poeciliareticulata). 80 guppy fish wit...
